Dr. Frank Fogle Uses QCD to Fund Scholarship to Forge “Pathways to Success”

Dr. Frank Fogle

Frank R. Fogle (BS ’80, MSE ’87, PhD ’90) benefited tremendously from his father’s passion for education and his association with UAH. Now he is using his retirement plan’s required minimum distributions to invest in the education of current and future scholars.

“I was inspired to set up the Valmore and Frank R. Fogle Scholarship to honor my dad,” Frank says. “After seeing 15 Fogle family members benefit from our UAH education, I was motivated to help others have the same opportunity.”

Frank had already included UAH in his estate plan when he learned he could use qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from his retirement plan to make an immediate impact through a scholarship.

“Funding the scholarship with a QCD will help provide others a path to success without the need for student loans while reducing my tax burden,” Frank says.

For most of his career, Frank worked on optical telescopes for NASA. He contributed to the power system integration of the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. He has served as a UAH adjunct professor for 21 years.

Frank credits his UAH experience with providing the real-world experience and knowledge he needed to succeed. Now he wants others to enjoy the same golden opportunities and hopes fellow alumni will join the cause.

“It feels good to promote education, and meeting the Fogle Scholars at the annual scholarship breakfast is a joy. It’s important to me to help students graduate without loans while setting them up for long-term achievement.”
